Isaac Plains Coal Joint Venture has established the Isaac Plains open cut coal mine, located approximately 7km east of Moranbah, in the Bowen Basin of Northern Queensland, Australia.
Isaac Plains' history dates back to early exploration conducted initially by Utah Development Company in the 1960's by Thiess Peabody Mitsui, and Queensland Mines Department in the 1970's, and other smaller exploration companies. These explorers were mainly targeting the Moranbah Measures.
Between 2002 and 2003, Aquila Coal Pty Ltd drilled 26 holes within EPC755, targeting the shallower Rangal Coal Measures. In 2004, Bowen Central Coal Joint Venture (a joint venture formed between AMCI Australia and Aquila Coal to explore the potential resource) began drilling within the current Isaac Plains mining area. Some 23,000 linear metres of drilling has been conducted proving up a resource in the Rangal Coal Measures. The joint venture participants applied for a Mining Lease and Environmental Authority over the area in March and were granted the Mining Lease in December 2005.
The Isaac Plains Coal Joint Venture, a 50/50 joint venture between Aquila Resources and CVRD (Aust), was formed in mid-2005, and a management team was appointed to develop and operate the Isaac Plains Coal Project.
